Today is Make Uk’s National Manufacturing day, when many businesses up and down the land, are opening their doors to visitors to encourage school leavers and anyone else interested in working in manufacturing to see what goes on. In most cases, Jo Bird have recruited local, often unskilled people, who have the right attitude and are keen to learn. Provide plenty of support and ongoing training to become highly skilled and valued members of the workforce. Trying to recruit at this time is far from easy, especially in the comparatively rural area where the Jo Bird factory is sited.
According to Stephen Phipson CBE from Make UK, their latest report “is asking for the Government to set a 15% GDP target for UK manufacturing. Make UK forecasts such growth would result in a £142 billion boost for the UK economy”. This report entitled Manufacturing: State of the Industry, the potential for growth (2022). This includes what support is needed to help achieve this growth figure.

We are fortunate in the UK in having plenty of support from a number of great organisations including Government departments such as the DIT, Business west, SWMAS, Universities and the National composites centre. It is sometimes just a case of knowing where to look.
